St. John’s Parish Administrator Change
As of January 31, 2018, our Parish Administrator of two years, Sue Beson, will be leaving St. John’s to become the Parish Administrator for St. Paul’s in Summerville. As many of you know, Sue’s daily commute brings her to Johns Island from Summerville so, while we are sad to see Sue leave, we rejoice with her, as she can continue serving God in her gifting in a position closer to home. We thank Sue for her service to this Parish and the love, care, and dedication she showed our parishioners.
We would also like to take this time to announce additional staff changes taking place in the New Year. Lane McKelvey, who has been our Director of Communications since late August, will be taking over as Parish Administrator February 1, 2018. The roles of Parish Administrator and Director of Communications will merge, and Lane will become responsible for both. As a result of the increased duties, we have separated the bookkeeping responsibilities from the administrative piece, and they will be handled outside of the Parish Administrator role.
Lane and her husband TJ, along with their four-year-old daughter, Vivienne attend the Walton Hall service each week. TJ is a Merchant Mariner by trade and works on a liveaboard dive charter vessel which takes him to Baja, Mexico every other month for a month at a time. The McKelvey family moved to Johns Island in July 2016 after sailing their catamaran to Charleston from Fort Lauderdale, Florida; they currently live on their boat at St. John’s Yacht Harbor. TJ, a Charleston native, attended First Baptist School with Sam Gervais and mentioned to Lane that Sam’s church—St. John’s Parish—might be a good fit for the family. After attending one service at Walton Hall, Lane knew immediately it was indeed an excellent fit and they were quickly involved in the Young Adult Bible Study.
Lane is originally from the very small village of La Rue, Ohio where her family has lived and farmed since 1835. Reared in the La Rue United Methodist Church, Lane left Ohio in 2005 to attend college at Eastern Michigan University on an Army ROTC scholarship. Upon graduating and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, Lane accepted a full-time position with the South Carolina Army National Guard in Walterboro, which brought her to the Charleston area. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army in 2015, Lane became a stay-at-home mom to Vivienne until she began working at St. John’s.
In her free time, Lane enjoys sailing with her family, yoga, and writing. She has a passion and heart for individuals struggling with addiction, and has previously enjoyed volunteering with those in recovery programs. TJ, Lane, and Vivienne hope to one day sail their boat through the Caribbean Islands before settling somewhere in the Caribbean or Central America as full-time missionaries.
Please stop by the office to meet Lane and learn more about her; she would love to meet more of our parishioners, too!
St. John’s Treasurer Change
In addition to the Parish Administrator changes, our treasurer, David Bernthal, will be stepping down at the end of January 2018. We are grateful to David for faithfully serving as Treasurer for the last year and sharing his gifts with the parishioners of St. John’s. As David steps down, John Gervais will be sharing his gifts with us, as he becomes our Treasurer in February 2018.
John is a Johns Island native and has attended St. John’s Parish since birth; baptized and confirmed by Rev. Guerry. In addition to regularly attending the 8:00 am service with his wife of 38 years, Peggy, John has previously served on Vestry numerous times, and as Junior Warden a few times and Senior Warden several times. Owner of Atlantic Boat Air Conditioning and Refrigeration on Johns Island, John has decades of experience managing the financials for a business and we look forward to utilizing his knowledge and expertise. Previously, John has served on the Finance Committee, as well as the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
John and Peggy have two adult children, Jenny and Jay, who were also baptized and confirmed at St. John’s. Jenny is married to Chris Gaffney and is an attorney in Jacksonville, FL. Jay is a senior at Clemson University, studying Civil Engineering. Peggy works and serves in several capacities at St. John’s, including previously serving on Vestry. Currently, Peggy is very involved with the Haut Gap ministry and outreach.
An avid sailor, John spends much of his leisure time on the water sailing, boating, or engaging in other water sports. If he cannot be on the water, John enjoys attending football, soccer, and basketball games; especially when those games are Clemson.
We look forward to welcoming John as our new Treasurer!
