St. John’s Parish Church, Johns Island, South Carolina is seeking a full-time Associate Rector.  We are a mid-sized parish in the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina who is in a time of transition. In July 2022 we moved away from historic buildings and grounds and are in the process of developing a new campus, “Church Place,” a 21 acre parcel of land on Main Rd. Johns Island. This is an exciting time in the life of our congregation as we continue to follow our Lord’s direction. The congregation celebrates 292 years of worship on Johns Island in 2026.

 

Position Overview

The Associate Rector plays a critical role in the vision and mission of St. John’s Parish Church by leading key discipleship programs within the body of the congregation as well as out in the local community. Clerical duties also include regular celebrating Eucharist and preaching. Living into our vision and calling is crucial for this position.

Priestly Responsibilities

Our next Associate Rector will declare love for God through Anglican worship in the following ways and utilizing robust Prayer Book worship through the 2019 Book of Common Prayer.

Worship — As a priest of St. John’s Parish Church, provide godly direction to the people of God through worship leadership on Sunday (and other days through the Church Calendar) including but not limited to officiating worship services, celebrating eucharist, preaching, funerals, weddings, and other priestly duties.  Monday through Thursday Morning Prayer livestream shared duties with other clergy. 

Preaching and Teaching — Participate in the regular rotation of preaching during worship services, teaching, preparing and equipping small groups, etc. 

Pastoral Care — Serve regularly as a member of the Pastoral Care team, providing pastoral care to the congregation through counseling and visitation.

 

Discipleship Duties and Responsibilities

Our next Associate Rector will prepare disciples of Jesus Christ for global mission, share the healing power of the Holy Spirit, and care for the community in the following ways:

Adult Formation — Develop new small groups to be held in homes or other community spaces as well as help coordinate current groups to operate efficiently and in step with the vision of St. John’s Parish Church.  Adult formation is a developing area of ministry which gives the Associate Rector opportunity to create, craft, and implement practices of life together.  Generally teaching, praying, and providing spiritual guidance for the congregation.  

Ministry to Young Families — Help coordinate, plan, and facilitate with an ever-growing demographic of families, including but not limited to working alongside children’s, youth, and young adult ministries.  

Mission and Evangelism — Participate in the important calling of Jesus to make disciples of all nations, by being a visible member of the congregation and the larger Johns Island community.  Additionally, being open to participate in other local, regional, and international missions with the congregation.  

Leadership and Administration — The Associate Rector will serve in leadership capacities including but not limited to: Vestry meetings, office administration, staff meetings, worship planning, pastoral team sermon planning, etc.

Qualifications

A foundational relationship with Jesus Christ that is evidenced by the Fruit of the Spirit. A desire to serve Christ and His Church through humble collaborative leadership, pastoral care, worship, and discipleship.  An ability to coordinate, equip, and deepen discipleship through teaching, preaching, planning small groups, and pastoral care.  Ordination in the Anglican Church of North America with Mdiv or equivalent degree.  A willingness to agree and sign off on the Statement of Faith for both the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina and St. John’s Parish Church.
